Apollo News:Belt Edge Fraying On A BM2000/58 Milling Machine Usually Starts At The Triple Idler Roller

A frayed conveyor belt edge almost always gets blamed on the belt. In practice, on BM2000/58 road milling machines the belt is the last component in a chain that starts with one seized roller on the return strand. The belt cannot run straight over a roller that has stopped turning, so it climbs to one side, abrades against the frame, and only then does anyone notice the damage.

That sequence matters commercially. A belt is a significantly more expensive part than a triple idler set, and by the time the fray is visible the belt has usually absorbed weeks of unnecessary edge wear. Replacing the roller set at the first sign of tracking drift is the cheaper intervention, and it is the one that keeps the machine on the cut.

How a seized idler becomes a frayed belt
  1. Bearing contamination. Grit and wash water reach the bearing end. The roller drags, then stops turning.
  2. Load shifts sideways. The belt rides over a stationary roller instead of a turning one and starts to walk to the low side.
  3. Return strand sags. With one roller out of service the remaining two take more load and the strand loses its flat line.
  4. Edge contact. The belt edge touches structure or a support it was never meant to rub against.
  5. Fray becomes failure. Once the carcass is exposed the belt fails without warning, usually mid-shift.
What the triple idler set changes

The 90117 / 190358 set carries all three rollers on one bracket frame, matched and set at the same centres. That has two practical consequences for a maintenance team.

  • The frame stays square. A single lift replaces the whole set, so nobody is pressing individual rollers out of a frame that has already lost its alignment.
  • No mixed-age bearings. Fitting one new roller beside two worn ones overloads the new bearing and shortens the life of the part that was just paid for.

Sealed bearing ends keep grit and wash water out of the bearing cavity, which is where idler seizure starts. The bracket is sized for the return strand load so it does not flex under belt tension, and the three rollers spread the belt weight instead of concentrating it on one contact point.

  • Inspect the belt edges for the first signs of fraying before they open up
Fitting notes

Lock out the conveyor, release belt tension and support the frame before the bolts come out, then undo the mounts evenly so the bracket does not spring. Clean the mounting faces, seat the set, torque in a cross pattern, re-tension the belt and run the conveyor empty for several minutes to confirm tracking before loading material.

Supply and ordering

Sets ship from stock at a minimum order of one set, packed in carton or on pallet, dispatched 7-15 days after payment and payable by L/C or T/T. Monthly capacity is 1000 pieces. Send the machine serial and a photograph of the existing conveyor frame and the parts team will confirm the layout before shipment.
