Mat Thickness Drift On An Asphalt Paver Usually Traces Back To The 14317390 Leveling Sensor

A pavement course that measures right at the start of a pull and thin two hundred metres later rarely has a screed problem. On automatic grade control machines the screed is following whatever the leveling sensor tells it, and when the sensor output drifts the screed obediently follows the drift. The 14317390 TYP11 leveling sensor, a 6-pin screw-thread mounted unit for asphalt pavers, is the feedback device in that loop - and it is the first part worth checking when thickness wanders.

The commercial consequence is straightforward. A sensor is a single component; a rejected lane is a milling and re-lay operation. Diagnosing the sensor before the paving crew starts chasing the screed pays for itself the first time it prevents a rework.

What the sensor actually does

The sensor measures the vertical distance from its mounting on the mast or sensor arm down to a reference - a grade line, a stringline, or the existing surface. That distance goes to the control console, which drives the screed hydraulics to hold mat thickness and cross-slope. Everything else in the paving train is downstream of that number being stable.

  • Thickness control: the console holds a fixed offset from the reference, so any error in the measured distance becomes an error in mat thickness.
  • Cross-slope: a second sensor on the opposite side closes the slope loop, and a drifting pair produces a twisting mat.
  • Joint quality: stable feedback is what allows a transverse joint to close cleanly instead of being reworked.

Why the TYP11 housing and 6-pin connector matter on site

The TYP11 designation refers to the threaded barrel housing. It screws directly into the paver mast or sensor arm, which holds the sensor square to the reference and keeps it there through constant machine vibration. A sensor that has worked loose in its thread reads a changing angle, not a changing surface - and the console cannot tell the difference.

The 6-pin connector carries supply, ground, signal and diagnostic lines in one plug. Because it is a standard interface rather than a machine-specific harness, the sensor can be swapped onto paver control systems that use the same 6-pin leveling convention without rewiring the mast. The plug is also the most common failure point after wash-down: moisture in the connector produces intermittent readings long before the sensor itself fails.

Five symptoms worth acting on

  • Mat thickness wanders along a pull even though the reference has not changed
  • Cross-slope readings drift, or the crew ends up correcting the screed manually
  • The console shows sensor errors, or the value jumps with no physical movement
  • Readings drop out after wash-down because moisture has reached the connector
  • Impact damage or a bent barrel means the sensor no longer sits square in the mast

Fitting sequence

  1. Switch off the paver and isolate the control circuit before unplugging anything.
  2. Unthread the old sensor, clean the thread and check the new barrel seats fully and square.
  3. Inspect the 6-pin plug and socket for corrosion, bent pins or moisture.
  4. Route the cable clear of hot surfaces and moving linkages so it cannot be pulled taut.
  5. Power up and verify the console reading against a known reference.
  6. Check grade and slope over a short test pull before committing to the full lane.

Supply and ordering

Sensors ship from stock at a minimum order of one piece, packed in carton or box, dispatched 1-2 weeks after payment and payable by L/C or T/T. Monthly capacity is 1000 pieces. Send the machine model, the control system in use and a photograph of the existing sensor and connector and the parts team will confirm the interface before shipment.

Part numbers are listed for cross-reference only and do not imply original equipment manufacture.
