A mechanical pendulum sensor that tells the leveling system what the screed is actually doing, so drainage slope stays on spec instead of drifting with the operator's eye.
A slope sensor is the only component on the machine that knows the cross-slope of the mat. The screed can be level to the eye and still be wrong by half a percent, which is the difference between a road that drains and a road that ponds water at every low point after the first rain.
Inside this unit a pendulum hangs under gravity, mechanically linked to the tow arm or reference beam. As ground level changes, the pendulum arm rotates and an internal precision potentiometer converts that rotation into an analog signal. The control console compares the live value with the target slope and tilts the screed automatically, which removes the constant manual trimming that wears out operators on long pulls.
No optical window to cloud over, no sonic cone to misread soft mix. The pendulum references true vertical, so the output stays honest whatever the surface texture is doing.
S1800, S1900 and S2100 machines share this reference, which lets a fleet carry a single spare instead of a different sensor per machine.
Because the output is a plain analog signal, a multimeter across the connector proves whether the sensor or the harness is at fault before anything is replaced.

Useful when verifying sensor response against a spirit level or a straight edge. Drop is measured over the mat width of the lane being paved.
| Cross-Slope | Drop over 4 m | Drop over 6 m | Typical Use |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1.0 % | 40 mm | 60 mm | Flat urban carriageway |
| 1.5 % | 60 mm | 90 mm | Standard highway camber |
| 2.0 % | 80 mm | 120 mm | Fast drainage, heavy rainfall |
| 2.5 % | 100 mm | 150 mm | Shoulders and approaches |
| Symptom | Check | Likely Culprit |
|---|---|---|
| Screed ignores the target slope | Signal voltage at the connector while tilting the arm by hand | Sensor output dead, or harness broken at the hinge |
| Slope reading jumps in steps | Pendulum arm freedom and bracket torque | Sticking pivot or loose mounting bracket |
| Reading drifts when hot | Housing sealing, gasket condition | Moisture ingress after a wash-down |
| Slope holds but the mat waves | Sensitivity and tow-point zeroing | Calibration, not the sensor |
