Why the eccentric connection decides mat quality

The tamper bar is the first component to act on the mix behind the screed plate. Each stroke pre-compacts the asphalt before the screed levels it, and every one of those strokes passes through the eccentric connection. The joint converts the rotary output of the tamper drive into the linear stroke of the bar, and it does so several thousand times per minute under heat, grit and vibration.

When the joint wears, the stroke loses both length and timing. The result is visible on the mat: density that changes across the paving width, a wave pattern behind the screed, tearing at the edges, and a surface that cannot be corrected by adjusting screed angle or speed. Contractors often replace tamper bars and bearings while the real source of the problem, a worn eccentric connection, stays in the machine.

The eccentric offset is machined and checked against the original stroke dimension, because a few tenths of a millimetre in offset changes how the tamper bar meets the mix.

Installation and fitment
